Marsellos Wilder tests positive for banned substance following recent victory in Texas.

The extremely outspoken, once beaten cruiserweight, brother of WBC heavyweight champion Deontay, Marsellos Wilder 3-1 (2 Ko’s) is reported to have failed a drug test, following his March 16th bout with Mark Sanchez 0-2, on the Errol Spence v Mikey Garcia card in Arlington Texas.. The bout which was initially registered as a first round knockout in favour of the 29 year old Wilder, has now been changed to a No Contest. The Texas bout was to have been Marcellos’ return to victory following his January 26th stoppage defeat at the hands of William Deets 6-12, in Brooklyn.. It’s tough to see a way that anyone could take Wilders career seriously now, in 5 appearances at close to 30 years of age, with limited amateur boxing experience, he’s suffered a loss and a positive substance test result, boxing against an opposition level with a total of 7 wins and 25 losses.. There has been no details yet released regarding the substance (Being a PED or recreational) neither are there and known details yet of the suspension Wilder will face.. Heavyweight brother Deontay is due to face number one challenger Dominick Breazeale in a grudge match on May 18th in Brooklyn, a match that has materialised partially due to an altercation Breazeale had with Marcellos Wilder back in February of 2017, following Deontays victory over Gerald Washington in Birmingham Alabama.. It’s probably safe to say at this point, that there really is only one fighter in the Wilder household, with Marsellos’ career grinding to a premature halt before it even got started..

Martin Bakole returns tomorrow in Poland against Mariusz Wach.

Tomorrow night, April 6th, Scottish based Congolese Heavyweight Martin Bakole 11-1 (8 Ko’s) makes the first return to the ring following his disappointing loss to Bounty Hunter Jr back in October, travelling to Katowice, Poland, where he makes the bold step of meeting former world title challenger Mariusz Wach 33-4 (17 Ko’s) over 10 rounds for the Polish International Heavyweight title.. Wach is coming off losses to Artur Szpilka and Jarrell Miller, but did manage to pull off a decent scalp 3 fights ago, back in 2017 when he outpointed tough Erkan Teper in Leipzig.. Bakole v Wach is part of a seven fight card, headlined by super middleweights Robert Parzeczewski and Dmitrii Chudinov..

Oleksandr Usyk faces Carlos Takam, May 25th.

Undisputed world cruiserweight champion Oleksandr Usyk takes his first step into heavyweight waters when he faces tough Carlos Takam at the MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland on May 25, live on DAZN in the US and Sky Sports in the UK.
Usyk (16-0, 12 KOs) has been the lightning rod in the cruiserweight division over the last 3 years, cleaning up the WBSS with his dominant victory over Murat Gassiev last July to become the first unified cruiserweight ruler since O’Neil Bell and possibly the most complete cruiserweight since Evander Holyfield, 3 decades ago..
Usyk made a bold statement last November in Manchester where he Knocked out Tony Bellew in the eighth round in his seventh world title victory and what now seems to have been a farewell performance in the 200 pound division..
Usyk has chosen a live test for his heavyweight debut, French based Takam 36-5-1 (28 Ko’s) has boxed some of the premiere fighters in the division, and 2 years ago gave a great account of himself in a world title challenge for Anthony Joshua’s IBF and WBA titles on short notice, dragging Joshua into the tenth round and breaking the champions nose.. Takam also gave solid accounts of himself against Joseph Parker and Dereck Chisora, losing out narrowly on both occasions..

“May 25 marks a major moment in my career when I move to the Heavyweight division,” said Usyk. “At cruiserweight, I did it all and became the undisputed champion and that is my goal now in the Heavyweights.

“This is the ultimate challenge and it begins on May 25 against Carlos Takam. It’s a tough first fight but I need to test myself against World class opposition on my new road to undisputed.”

Usyk won Olympic gold at heavyweight back in 2012, but had previously boxed at super heavyweight, and in the WSB series beat our own Olympic Super-heavyweight silver medalist Joe Joyce, displaying cameos of what we should expect come May..

Shakur Stevenson, arrested and charged, following Miami brawl.

Just days after his 21st birthday, Olympic silver medalist Shakur Stevenson was arrested and apparently charged with misdemeanour battery, following his alleged role in a Miami parking garage brawl.. Apparently Stevenson and fellow fighter, David Grayton, a 31 year old, 15-2-1 (11 Ko’s) welterweight from DC, we’re caught on Closed Circuit surveillance, brawling with a group of individuals next to a parking garage pay booth.. According to statements made to Miami police, both fighters made comments to the group whilst inside the garage, a group which included two females, to whom explicit sexual references were directed at, igniting the incident..
According to the police report, one Male and one female were treated by medical staff at the scene, both described as visibly injured.. Stevenson and Grayton had fled the scene by the time police had arrived, but were both apprehended an hour later at a South Beach Hotel, where both fighters had superficial injuries to suggest their involvement.. (Stevenson having a cut lip, and Grayton grazed knuckles.)
Authorities later checked CCTV footage, which has since been publicly released, and the outcome looks quite ominous for the pair..
Stevenson (7-0, 4 KO) has been extremely active, fighting eight weeks since December, Grayton is coming off a loss to Miguel Cruz back in November.
Prior to this incident, Stevenson was scheduled to meet Carlos Ruiz on August 18th as part of the Bryant Jennings-Alexander Dimitrenko undercard, but having viewed the footage, that appearance may be is a degree of doubt..
Shakur up to this point has never shown any particular history of this type of nature and had previously been publicly admired for his exemplary conduct as a rising young Olympian..
Fame and fortune really hasn’t reached Stevenson as of yet, let’s hope this incident isn’t a prelude to what we could expect from him as his popularity heightens.. Previous recent examples set by Adrien Broner should have acted as a deterrent for young fighters in their position, but sometimes just like the saying goes.. “Youth is wasted on the young.”

Greg Cohen lodges protest to CSAC following Dinu’s loss to Pulev.

The Promoter of Heavyweight Bogdan Dinu, Greg Cohen has filed an appeal for the Change of Decision, with the California State Athletic Commission for his fighter, following his knockout loss against Kubrat Pulev on March 23 at The Hangar in Costa Mesa, California.
The details of the lodged protest underlines Pulev’s repeated rabbit punches, including an ‘Intentional’ shot to the back of Dinu’s head shortly before the stoppage, as the fighter was “On his knees and defenceless.”
Pulev was penalized a point by referee Raul Caiz for the foul, and when the action resumed Dinu was knocked down twice more by borderline legal punches clearly landing close to the back of his head before the bout was halted at 2:40 of the 7th, being scored as a TKO victory for the Bulgarian.
The California commission has agreed to hear out Cohen’s appeal, with a hearing date scheduled for May 14th..
It’s very rare that any commission changes a fight result on the strength of an appeal hearing, after the facts.. undermining the officiating at the time.. Pulev did land shots that appeared illegal during the bout, but in the instance of the rabbit punch that was thrown ‘Intentionally’ as Dinu was on his knees, to Pulev’s defence, Bogdan was dipping and crouching low, repeatedly just prior to going to his knees.. In a fight where the highly ranked Pulev was cut and anxious to put his opponent away, there is a case for the accused fighter being unsighted in the specific instance.. Pulev is no saint, and the fight wasn’t his finest hour, but I doubt that Mr Cohen and his fighter will find success from the appeal.. I don’t blame Greg for his claims, it’s his business and in the same position I’d probably represent my fighter in the same way.

Heavyweight Kash Ali faces consequences following Saturdays biting incident.

Following the atrocious episode that led to the disqualification of Rotherham Heavyweight Kash Ali on Saturday in Liverpool, the British Boxing board of control has suspended the fighter indefinitely pending a future hearing, to allow Ali the opportunity to justify his actions.. Ali was losing Saturdays fight, and twice resorted to biting his opponent David Price, first in the second round and later at the conclusion of the bout where he wrestled Price to the canvas and bit the Liverpool mans mid section, leaving noticeable teeth marks.. Kash has already had his purse for the fight (£24,000) his career highest earnings, withheld, and could face a lengthy suspension and the possibility of a further fine.. Ali had never boxed on a high profile stage before and it may be some time until a similar opportunity arises.. Price appeared slightly more forgiving after the event, explaining how Ali was actually in the fight, and really had no need for his extreme actions.. Ali made a brief interview after the fact, where he embarrassingly explained that he has no excuse and really doesn’t know the reasoning behind the biting, offering what appeared as a genuine apology to Price.. The rematch looks unlikely, with David looking ahead to possibly meeting the winner of the upcoming David Allen v Lucas Browne fight.

Popular heavyweight Stan Allen, passes in Las Vegas..

Today brought the terribly sad news that my friend and former promising heavyweight prospect Stanley Allen had passed away in Las Vegas at the premature age of 47.. I first had the fortune of meeting Stan when he was part of the training camp of former undisputed heavyweight champion Mike Tyson in 1996, along with longtime friends, Nate Tubbs, John Bray and Leroy Seals.. I was originally introduced to him by extrovert photographer Kirk Newman, and spent the best part of the following 3 weeks in hysterical laughter at his dry humour.. Stan was undeniably tough, I witnessed first hand how he could hang in there with Tyson through tough sessions leading up to both Holyfield fights, but Stan had a softer side, a mellow guy who loved his family.. Allen found boxing as a teen in Gary Indiana, boxing out of the Gary Pal Gym.. By 1989 he was a member of the US team and in the same year became the Chicago Novice Golden Gloves heavyweight champion.. Stan turned pro in 1996, racking up 5 straight wins in his first 18 months, finishing the year with an appearance on a double world championship Top Rank promoted card in Tijuana, Mexico, knocking out the huge Anthony Curry in 3 rounds.. Unfortunately it appeared that his work as a top drawer sparring partner for a legendary champion would take precedence over his own career, he would lose his first bout on the Vince Philips v Alfonso Sánchez world super lightweight championship fight undercard in 1998 to Philadelphia’s Ron McCarthy in Atlantic City, before dropping a points decision to rising prospect Harold Sconiers 6 months later on a heavyweight Explosion card in Connecticut.. Stan returned to the ring a couple more times, most recently in 2012, taking on 24 year old son of another former Tyson sparring partner Elijah McCall, falling short for the final time.. Nobody that Stanley crossed paths with forgot him, when he travelled to the Uk for Mike Tyson’s visits to fight both Julius Francis and Lou Savarese, Stan made an impression on everyone he met, a colourful charming man who had a calming presence.. A loyal man who put his family and friends first, whom is going to be missed immensely.. RIP Stan.. affectionately known as Corky.. Stanley Allen, you were loved..

Oleksandr Gvozdyk makes first defence in bizarre circumstances over Doudou Ngumbu.

WBC light heavyweight champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk, 17-0, 14 KOs, made a successful first defence of his championship last night with a curious Tko Victory over unheralded French challenger Doudou Ngumbu 38-9 (14 Ko’s) in the fifth round at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia Pennsylvania.. Gvozdyk, leading comfortably on the scorecards was dictating the fifth round, when Ngumbu backed up and along the ropes, before bizarrely crouching down in pain, holding his right calf.. The referee halted the action momentarily while the ringside physician inspected the injured challenger. Amidst the confusion between corner, referee and doctor, several moments passed before referee Eric Dali waved the event off, with Ngumbu unable to continue.. The time 58 seconds of the 5th.

The nature of the stoppage along with the tame approach of the challenger wasn’t exactly the way Gvozdyk would have wanted to complete his first successful defence, but in his own words, “Sometimes boxing is like that.” Gvozdyk wishes to unify the titles and leaves his next move down to his teams discretion..

Scott Fitzgerald drops Anthony Fowler en route to upset victory in Liverpool.

In a wonderful battle of undefeated former amateur teammates, Anthony Fowler 9-0 (8 Ko’s) and Scott Fitzgerald 12-0 (9 Ko’s) met in a highly publicised grudge match for the vacant WBA International super welterweight title in a chief support on the M&S Bank Arena, Matchroom card tonight in Liverpool..
Heavily favoured local fighter Fowler got off to a great start, establishing the faster jab, with more accuracy throughout the first couple of rounds.. In the third Fowler started putting quick combinations together, forcing the Preston fighter to be patient and bide his time.. By round 5 Fitzgerald appeared to be the more comfortable boxer, out-landing Fowler (Who was now cut above the left eye) with the jab continually and using his range exceptionally.. Scott maintained the pressure in round 6, forcing Fowler onto the reverse for the first time in the fight.. The Liverpool man found himself in unchartered territory by the 7th, and wasn’t responding well, continually loading up with his shots and allowing the more mobile Fitzgerald to pick his shots comfortably.. Both fighters had their moments in the 8th, Fitzgerald looking the more composed and relaxed having appeared to steal a string of rounds, again outscoring the more disorganised Fowler with the more meaningful shots, Fowler being warned for low blows at the end of the session. Round 9 saw the determined Liverpool fighter come out purposefully, landing sharp counters.. moments into the round Fowler landed a huge uppercut, followed by a barrage of relentless punches, for the first time Fitzgerald looked in desperate trouble, but stubbornly rode it out and towards the end of the round, fired back at the exhausted scouser, leaving Fowler looking demoralised.. All appeared even going into the final round, with both guys carefully fencing for openings, Fitzgerald made the breakthrough with a sneaky uppercut midway through the round, quickly followed by a right hand backing Fowler up unbalanced, before unleashing two quick left hooks that floored Fowler for the first time in his career.. Demoralised and not yet recovered, he walked into more Fitzgerald fire, before the Preston man, rather immaturely stepped back, and allowed the desperate Fowler precious moments to recover as he enjoyed a short moment of showboating, in the belief that he was now ahead in the fight.. At the final bell both guys acknowledge each other before returning to their corners in anticipation of the scorecards..

Scott Fitzgerald, the 6-1 betting underdog took the decision and WBA international title by scores of 96-94 (For Fowler) and 95-94 (Twice for Fitzgerald)

Both guys briefly embraced before some candid yet gracious interviews.. Fowler gave high praise to Scott whom he admitted had boxed a tough crafty fight.. Fitzgerald paid testament to Fowler’s strength and toughness but attested that his newly found vigour for dedication pushed him through when many had written him off.. Scott generously offered Fowler the chance of a rematch in the distant future but expressed interest in a fight with British Champion Ted Cheeseman next..
