Big Baby overwealms Washington in Brooklyn.
In a pivotal battle between two promising heavyweights, Jarrell Miller (19-0-1, 17 Ko's) scored an impressive 8th round stoppage over former WBC heavyweight title challenger Gerald Washington (18-1-1, 12 Ko's) at the Barclays centre in Brooklyn tonight.. Washington got off to a great start, controlling the opener with the jab, keeping the shorter Miller off balance and unable to mount a serious assault throughout the round.. unfortunately, the opener was the only 3 minutes of this fight Washington would compete in successfully.. The 248lb Californian allowed himself to be manoeuvred and dominated by Miller continually, who appeared to literally walk through anything Gerald had to offer.. The space Washington created earlier to utilise the jab had been surrendered as Jarrell closed down every inch of ground to turn the fight into a close quarters brawl.. In round 6 Washington opened up with his best effort of the fight landing continually at will on Miller, unfortunately having little affect.. The 298lb New Yorker was deceptively fresh and maintained a good effective work-rate even in the later rounds.. Washington looked mentally demoralised by the end of the 6th and at the conclusion of the 7th it looked a certainty that it was only a matter of time before El Gallo Negro would need rescuing from himself.. At the end of the 8th, another torrid session, referee Gary Rosato called a halt as Gerald had little to offer.. Miller scoring his most impressive win to date on paper, continuing as an undefeated heavyweight on a landscape scarce of interesting characters.. Big Baby can fight, but at close to 300 pounds, it's hard to take him seriously in terms of world titles.. Jarrell beat an intimidated opponent tonight, and at times looked far to easy to hit, the jury is still out..
