Kownacki stops Szpilka in 4 in NY.
In a highly uncharacteristic performance, former WBC title challenger Artur Szpilka (20-2, 15 Ko's) suffered an unexpected stoppage defeat at the hands of the relatively inexperienced Adam Kownacki (15-0, 13 Ko's) in four rounds at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale New York.. Szpilka, who had only previously lost to quality operators Bryant Jennings and Deontay Wilder, looked subdued throughout most of the bout and allowed himself to be backed up and outworked by the fresher looking Kownacki.. Throughout the first 3 Kownacki frustrated Szpilka with accurate combinations, without any spirited response.. The fourth round saw Szpilka clown the unbeaten Kownacki, lowering his hands, walking onto a cluster of shots that dropped the Pole. Moments later Kownacki seized the moment and hammered home clean head punches, urging Arthur Mercante jr to stop the bout.. Szpilka appears the sole noted name of Kownacki's unblemished resume, while Szpilka had notable wins over Jameel McCline, Owen Beck and Tomasz Adameck, but couldn't match the busier Kownacki on the night.. Trainer Ronnie Shields appeared baffled at the conclusion of the fight, explaining that Artur had a tremendous camp and had followed very little of the gameplan they had in place.. Adam was his career lightest at 242lbs and looks a promising prospect..
