Jesse Hart outhustles Sullivan Barrera to score unanimous victory in light heavyweight debut.
Former double super middleweight title challenger Jesse Hart 26-2 (21 KOs) made an impressive statement in his light heavyweight debut by scoring a hard earned unanimous decision victory over former light heavyweight title challenger Sullivan Barrera 22-3 (14 Ko’s) on Saturday night at the MGM in Las Vegas..
Hart started enthusiastically, in an attempt to establish his authority on the Cuban, managing to drop Sullivan with an overzealous low blow in the opener.. Barrera fired back defiantly but appeared to go down again in round 2 from a stiff right hand, and although referee Jay Nady ruled it a slip, Barrera continued on unsteady legs, having to dig deep to survive the session.. Hart maintained his momentum through the third, but became drawn into unnecessary exchanges in the fourth that saw him hurt badly by a couple of right hands at the end of the round.. Jesse stuck to plan through rounds 5 and 6, boxing with authority and not allowing Barrera to close the distance.. Hart bided his time through the 7th before finally finding a breakthrough in the 8th, dropping Barrera with a grazing left hook, catching him slightly unbalanced.. Sullivan rose quickly, found his composure and returned fire.. Jesse, satisfied with the knockdown coasted the remainder of the round and failed to capitalise, assuming the breakthrough was enough to pull away.. Uncharacteristically the Philadelphian looked unwilling to engage through the final two sessions, an move met with a negative response from the otherwise partisan crowd.. A diluted ending to what for the most part was an outstanding Victory..
Scores were 96-93, 97-92, and 99-90.
