Jose Ramirez overcomes Mo Hooker in 6 to unify WBC/WBO titles in Texas.
In a highly entertaining bout between undefeated Super lightweight champions, WBC title holder Jose Ramirez 25-0 (17 Ko’s) overcame some testing moments before dropping and later stopping WBO champion Maurice Hooker 26-0-3 (17 Ko’s) in the 6th round of a terrific battle at The Events centre of the University of Arlington Tx. Ramirez started fast, backing Hooker up early to establish some authority on the bout, Hooker used his huge reach to overcome the early storm.. Ramirez caught Hooker with a grazing shot towards the end of the session, causing Mo to lose balance and get his feet tied up, before hitting the canvas, an obvious slip, that was ruled otherwise by referee Mark Nelson.. Hooker once again reverted to the jab to set up his bigger shots in the 2nd, but found himself walking into ruthless counters to head and body.. The 3rd saw Hooker box more assertively, landing decent right hands off the jab, but a determined Ramirez fired back to turn the remainder of the session into a brawl.. Both guys continued with a similar pattern through rounds 4 and 5, with Ramirez showing the more versatility in the exchanges.. The breakthrough came early in the 6th, when Ramirez caught Hooker with a solid left hook.. The WBO champion reeled backwards towards the ropes, as Jose instinctively delivered a flurry of unanswered hurtful shots that visibly appeared to snap Hookers head back, forcing Mark Nelson to call a halt at 1:48 of the round..
The bout promised to deliver with both fighters evenly matched on paper prior to the event.. The fight itself didn’t disappoint with Ramirez having that bit more firepower on the night..
