Tragic News today that Pernell Whitaker has died as a result of injuries sustained when he was struck by a car whilst walking on Sunday night in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Whitaker was just 55 years of age.. According to police, at 10:04 pm they received a call reporting a vehicle-pedestrian accident at the intersection between Northampton Boulevard and Baker Road in Virginia beach.. When the police arrived at the scene they found that Whitaker had been hit by a vehicle and had passed at the scene.. There are no suspicious circumstances, just a terrible and unfortunate accident which remains under investigation..
Whitaker was a defensive genius, one of the greatest technical boxers in history, largely regarded as the pound for pound #1 throughout most of the 1990s.. Pernell was an Olympic gold medalist at the 1984 games in Los Angeles and displayed his talent in possibly his biggest professional fight 9 years later, when he was held to a draw by the then 87-0 Julio Cesar Chavez, a fight that a majority of ringsiders held the opinion that Whitaker had comfortably won.. Sweet Pea held world championships at lightweight, junior welterweight, welterweight and light middleweight.. retiring with a compelling record of 40-4-1 with 17 knockouts..
