Shakur Stevenson comes home to impress.
The highly anticipated homecoming fight for rising featherweight contender Shakur Stevenson 12-0 (7 KOs) took place on Saturday night at the Prudential Center in Newark Nj, and the youngster didn’t disappoint, scoring an impressive 3rd round knockout of second replacement, Former world title challenger Alberto Guevara 27-5 (12 KOs).
Stevenson came to impress from the start, hurting Guevara early with a left hook to the body. The game Mexican who took the fight on just a weeks notice boxed cautiously as Shakur continued to attack the midsection.. Half way into the second, a left hook to the body dropped Guevara.. Rising promptly Alberto was dropped again by an extended left hand as Guevara was backing into the ropes, just prior to the round ending.. Half way through the 3rd a predatory Stevenson landed a questionable body shot followed by a left hand that dropped Guevara for a third time, however referee David Fields ruled the initial shot as a low blow.. The Mexican milked the recovery time for a moment before resuming cautiously.. Stevenson moved in fast, skimming Guevara causing him to slip momentarily.. The Newark man stalked purposely, looking for the openings to close the show, a stabbing jab to the body set his man up for a Right hook, straight left combination that drew curtains on the evenings proceedings at 2:37 of the 3rd..
An ecstatic Stevenson later expressed: “That was a great performance I put on for the city of Newark... Top Rank, you all have to give me better competition I want the IBF and WBO .. I would love to go to England to fight Josh Warrington.”
