Deontay Wilder settles the doubters with dramatic 7th round Knockout of Luis Ortiz.
WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder 42-0-1 (41 KOs) showed once again how freakishly powerful he is, by pulling out a single lethal right hand to put away former challenger Luis Ortiz 31-1 (26 Ko’s) in the 7th round of a fight that appeared to slipping away from him on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Both fighters set of at an apprehensive pace until the Cubans straight left began to get the Champions attention.. Wilder had sporadic success but consistently seemed to be dictated by Ortiz tempo.. Wilder did begin to close the gap around the fifth, measuring the jab more accurately but still getting countered by the sneak backhand.. The end came when Ortiz appeared a little too comfortable to stand in range, barely seconds from the end of the session, Wilder snapped out a short right hand that turned the head of the Cuban, sending sweat spraying as he fell motionless into the ropes.. Kenny Bayliss called an immediate halt at 2:51 of the round, with Wilder trailing on all three scorecards.. 59-55, 59-55, 58-56.
