Former Champion Saoul Mamby passes ages 72.
Sad news has surfaced this week that former WBC super lightweight champion Saoul Mamby has passed away at the age of 72.
Mamby won the WBC super lightweight title in 1980, beating Sang Hyun Kim in South Korea, going on to make 5 successful defences before losing the to Leroy Haley in 1982.. Mamby rematched Haley in an attempt to regain his belt a year later but again fell short.. Haley campaigned in tremendous company, losing to Ronnie Shields, Billy Costello, Maurice Blocker, Glenwood Brown, John Meekins, Buddy Mcgirt, Jorge Vaca and Rene Arredondo in an 85 fight career..
In 1991 aged 44, Mamby went on a 8 fight losing streak, which should have signalled the end for the veteran.. Remarkably Saoul would be boxing 17 years later, losing finally to Anthony Osbourne in 2008, finished with a record of 45-34-6 with 18 KOs.
