After Kovalev.. What's next for Andre Ward.?
Following the fallout from last weekends remarkable stoppage of the seemingly invincible Sergei Kovalev many different scenarios have transpired.. Predictably John David Jackson was removed as trainer of Kovalev, with rumours of the former champion stepping up to cruiserweight to further his career, along with even more outrageous rumours surrounding Ward leaping into an unthinkable superfight with IBF and WBA heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, a rumour than many consider as mostly tongue in cheek.. The conclusion of the Ward v Kovalev fight did appear slightly dissatisfying, not necessarily the result, but the unconvincing way experienced referee Tony Weeks allowed border line shots to hustle Kovalev to the canvas before bringing such an important bout to a premature halt mid flow.. Facts are that Ward was finding his mark with legal body shots, visibly damaging the Russian, whilst intelligently setting himself to try finish the job. Had Weeks not intervened at his inopportune moment of choice, the likelihood is that we would have seen Ward complete the job in its entirety, without a shadow of controversy.. Luckily for boxing, those knowledgable enough could decipher for themselves what they had witnessed.. JD Jackson and Don Turner both offered huge praise for the way Ward meticulously out hustled their fighter, honest words from those closest to the notoriously stubborn Kovalev, who in their opinion just boxed his own predictable fight.. The obvious match for Ward now is a 175lb unification bout with Stevenson, following his recent rematch stoppage of Andrej Fonfara, although a very winnable fight with WBC Cruiserweight champion in recess Tony Bellew may land on the table..
