WBC world heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder has been arrested and charged with possession of Marijuana, following a stop in Alabama.
Alabama's Tuscaloosa Police department stated that Deontay was initially pulled over while driving for a 'window tint violation'.
Officers said it was then, following a random search that they found drugs inside the vehicle.
Wilder's attorney, Paul Patterson, told The Tuscaloosa news that the drugs in the vehicle did not belong to Wilder and that the vehicle had been driven by an associate while the boxer was away.
"Deontay has been out-of-state for several days, he returned home today from Georgia driving his Rolls Royce and selected his Cadillac Escalade from his fleet of vehicles to run errands."
Wilder was charged by police and released on a £780 ($1,000) bond.
Officers obtained verbal consent to search the vehicle and recovered a misdemeanour amount of the substance (marijuana) from the console,"
Wilder's last fight was a fifth round stoppage of the previously defeated Gerald Washington defending his WBC title for the 5th time since winning the belt in 2015.
Drugs have featured quite prevalently in the current heavyweight landscape.. Former unified Champion Tyson Fury made it publicly known last year that he was seeking help for a cocaine problem, former WBA champion Alexander Povetkin twice failed substance testing for the drug Meldonium, along with random test failures from Lucas Browne and Shannon Briggs.. IBF and WBA champion Anthony Joshua looks the only remaining player not to appear on this list, regardless of his past convictions for supplying drugs going back to 2011..
