Smith beats Groves to claim WBSS trophy.
Liverpool super middleweight Callum Smith (25-0, 18 KOs) scored a hugely impressive knockout of George Groves (28-4-2, 20 KOs) on Friday night to claim the WBA super middleweight title and WBSS crown at the King Abdullah Sports City, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Smith hurt Groves badly with a left hook in round 7, before finishing the job with a body shot and ruthless barrage, dropping the demoralised Groves to the canvas for the full count.. The undefeated Smith becomes the first winner of the prestigious World Boxing Super Series Muhammad Ali trophy.
In the co-main event, WBSS semi-finalist Chris Eubank, Jr. (27-2, 21 KOs) scored an early knockdown before forcing tough J.J. McDonough (16-5, 8 KOs) to quit after the third round of a one sided bout.. JJ couldn’t continue after suffering a shoulder injury.. In the post fight interview, Eubank had no sympathy for his beaten opponent, claiming that he quit when the going got tough.. Insulted by the comments, McDonough became animated and threatened to take the fight further outside the ring, strange for a man who only moments earlier claimed he couldn’t box on with a debilitating injury..
