Philadelphia mourns the loss of Willie Monroe.

The Boxing world is mourning 1970s Philadelphia middleweight legend Willie The Worm Monroe, who passed away this morning aged 70.. Monroes most memorable moments was his convincing 1976 victory over Marvin Hagler, only the second defeat on Marvin’s career at the time and one of the only defeats that Hagler legitimately admits to.. Willie also scored substantial victories over Kitten Hayward, Cyclone Hart, Carlos Marks, Felton Marshall and Billy Douglas.. Willie’s professional boxing career spanned for 12 years with a final record of 39-10-1 (26 Ko’s). On the night of the thriller in Manila, moments before Eddie Futch retired Joe Frazier following a damaging round 14, Monroe (a member of Joe Frazier’s entourage) had moved close to Ali’s corner and had overheard an exchange that suggested that Ali was calling for his gloves to be cut off, close to being retired himself, as Willie frantically signalled towards Georgie Benton, it was too late as Joe was retired by a compassionate Futch.. Willie Monroe was inducted into the Pennsylvania boxing hall of fame in 1990, and will forever be remembered as a Philadelphia boxing hero.. RIP Willie Monroe.
