Carlos Baldomir sentenced to 18 years in prison for Child abuse.

Former WBC Welterweight champion Carlos Baldomir 48 appeared in court in the Argentinian city of Santa Fe on Wednesday, having been held in custody since the end of 2016.. Handcuffed and bizarrely wearing a t-shirt with the single word “Triumph” emblazoned on it, the fighter was found guilty of repeatedly abusing a seven year old girl for the two years between 2012 and 2014.. The trial which started back on July 25th was kept behind closed doors after courtroom altercations with media covering the story..
Baldomir was sentenced to 18 years in prison, despite demands from state and private prosecutors on behalf of the victims family for a sentence of at least 20 years.. The fighter is expected to serve his sentence in Santa Fe’s Coronda jail where he has been on remand for 30 months.. Defiantly Carlos addressed the journalists with a middle finger salute before proceedings commenced..
Baldomir, who pleaded not guilty, became the WBC world welterweight champion after defeating Zab Judah in January 2006 at Madison Square Garden, he went on to defend his WBC Welterweight title by defeating the colourful Arturo Gatti in 2006.
Baldomir fought Floyd Mayweather on November 4 2006 in Las Vegas for the unified and lineal welterweight titles, losing by unanimous decision over 12..
Carlos Baldomir retired with a record of 49 wins and 16 defeats..

Hughie Fury to face Alexander Povetkin in London August 31st.

Former British heavyweight champion Hughie Fury 23-2 (13 Ko’s) will meet the experienced former WBA champion Alexander Povetkin 34-2 (24 Ko’s ) at The O2 in London on August 31 as a chief support to the upcoming lightweight world title showdown between Vasiliy Lomachenko and Luke Campbell. The 24-year-old Fury previously challenged Joseph Parker for his WBO title 2 years ago and more recently lost on points to Kubrat Pulev in an IBF eliminatior last year.. Hughie recently stopped an ageing Samuel Peter in a bad tempered affair in Saudi Arabia..
2004 Olympic champion Povetkin gallantly challenged Anthony Joshua last year for a handful of the heavyweight marbles, being stopped in 7.. Povetkin did hold his WBA belt for the best part of 2 years between 2011 and 2013, eventually losing the title in a unification bout with Wladimir Klitschko.. The bout is interesting considering the timing of the meeting.. Povetkin approaching the latter years of his long career, whilst the still youthful Fury continues to move amongst a decent pedigree off opposition having experienced a lot for his years.. Fury is a frustrating technician for anyone to fight, and Povetkin will have to bring a spirited showing if he’s to subdue Fury impressively..

Jose Ramirez overcomes Mo Hooker in 6 to unify WBC/WBO titles in Texas.

In a highly entertaining bout between undefeated Super lightweight champions, WBC title holder Jose Ramirez 25-0 (17 Ko’s) overcame some testing moments before dropping and later stopping WBO champion Maurice Hooker 26-0-3 (17 Ko’s) in the 6th round of a terrific battle at The Events centre of the University of Arlington Tx. Ramirez started fast, backing Hooker up early to establish some authority on the bout, Hooker used his huge reach to overcome the early storm.. Ramirez caught Hooker with a grazing shot towards the end of the session, causing Mo to lose balance and get his feet tied up, before hitting the canvas, an obvious slip, that was ruled otherwise by referee Mark Nelson.. Hooker once again reverted to the jab to set up his bigger shots in the 2nd, but found himself walking into ruthless counters to head and body.. The 3rd saw Hooker box more assertively, landing decent right hands off the jab, but a determined Ramirez fired back to turn the remainder of the session into a brawl.. Both guys continued with a similar pattern through rounds 4 and 5, with Ramirez showing the more versatility in the exchanges.. The breakthrough came early in the 6th, when Ramirez caught Hooker with a solid left hook.. The WBO champion reeled backwards towards the ropes, as Jose instinctively delivered a flurry of unanswered hurtful shots that visibly appeared to snap Hookers head back, forcing Mark Nelson to call a halt at 1:48 of the round..

The bout promised to deliver with both fighters evenly matched on paper prior to the event.. The fight itself didn’t disappoint with Ramirez having that bit more firepower on the night..

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, returns August 10th..

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr 50-3-1 (32 KOs) will return back to action from a 25 month hiatus when he faces Colombian Every Bravo 25-10-1 (19 Ko’s) on August 10 at Super Middleweight.. The designated location for the long awaited return is split between either Puerto Vallarta, Lagos de Moreno or Tijuana, Mexico and will be broadcast on Azteca 7’s The House of Boxing.
Chavez has been back in the gym in Tijuana training diligently under the watchful eye of Romulo Quirarte and appears by all accounts to be on superb form, eagerly awaiting live action.. Quirarte the man assuming the role of head coach says that he’s never seen Julio display such desire and ambition to return back to the top of the division..

The show also sees the ring return of former world champion Jose Uzcategui, a potential future opponent for JCC by the nature of the promotion.. No other fights or details have been released regarding the undercard, although the Promoters, Zanfer Promotions inc, have assured all concerned that a press release should emerge within the week.

The WBC reveal statement on the Dillian Whyte drug test situation.

It is common knowledge now, that Dillian Whyte failed a substance test prior to his bout with Oscar Rivas last Saturday.. Despite the failure, the BBB of C, who were fully aware of the revelation, allowed the bout to take place.. The specific substances that Dillian Whyte tested positive for were epimethandienone and hydroxymethandienone, two metabolites of the banned drug Dianabol....

The WBC acknowledged Whyte as its number one mandatory challenger on the merits of the victory, and upon hearing the whispers, have released a statement..

At of the time of the publication of this release, the WBC has not received any notification from anyone about a positive anti-doping test allegedly yielded by Dillian Whyte in connection with last Saturday’s fight against Oscar Rivas for the WBC interim heavyweight championship. The WBC has requested that the BBBofC, as the local, governing entity that oversaw that fight, formally provide any available information to the WBC.
The fight’s promoters contracted the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) to perform pre-fight and after-the-fight anti-doping tests on both fighters. The WBC is not aware that any of the test’s results VADA has received up to now have yielded any adverse findings. The WBC created the Clean Boxing Program which is administered by VADA, and which is a top priority of our organisation.
The WBC will not make any comments about the situation at hand until it receives the proper, formal communication from the BBBofC.

Sensational amateur prospect Evan Holyfield, 21 year old son of former two weight legend Evander Holyfield, signed a Profesional contract with the same outfit that governed the career of his father, Main Events.. Holyfield jr had meetings with several promotional companies before deciding on the company latterly known as Duva Boxing.. The Signing drew great interest to the Fighter Nation Boxing Gym in Houston Tx, where dozens of family, friends and onlookers gathered to witness the landmark moment in the future career of the 6 foot 1 light middleweight.. Evan will be managed and coached by Mo Watkins and will have his conditioning overseen by Tim Hallmark, the same man who helped Holyfield Sr achieve so much up at heavyweight..

Maxim Dadashev tragically passes..

The worse news that we ever want to hear in our fabulous sport is that one of our brave athletes has lost his life following a fight.. Sadly 28 year old Super lightweight contender Maxim Dadashev passed away yesterday as the result of injuries suffered from his 11th round loss to Subriel Matias last week in Maryland.. Dadashev was pulled out of the bout by chief second James McGirt after taking increasing punishment in the later rounds. Max left the ring under his own steam, but vomited on his way to the dressing room and quickly falling unwell.. The young fighter underwent emergency surgery on Friday night to relieve a severe brain swelling but failed to regain consciousness.. Dadashev was a highly respected fighter who had an extensive amateur career racking up a reported 281 bouts in the unpaid ranks before turning pro under the guidance of Egis Klimas.
Max compiled a professional record of 13-0 with 11 KOs and was rated in the top five by two governing bodies.. RIP Max Dadashev..

I remember being ringside at the IBF world lightweight title fight between Jesus Chávez and Leavander Johnson in 2005, after spending time with Johnson in the days prior, excitedly showing off his title belt in the gym.. 35 year old Leavander was stopped in what was to be his first world title defence and passed 5 days later after surgery to release pressure from a Subdural Hematoma and brain swelling.. I’ve never forgotten how I felt about the fragility of life after that event.. Life is precious and these fighters place their welfare on the line each and every time they lace on those gloves..

Manny Pacquiao turns back the clock to shock Keith Thurman in Las Vegas..

40 year old former multi weight world champion Manny Pacquiao 62-7-2 (39 Ko’s) possibly isn’t the fighter he was 10 years ago, but if you were to judge him on Saturdays performance you’d be forgiven for thinking he’d turned the clock back at least 5 years.. Manny scored a well deserved split decision victory over the previously unbeaten Keith Thurman, dropping the 30 year old in the opener on the way to earning the WBA Super world welterweight title in Las Vegas.. Thurman 29-0 (22 Ko’s) struggled with Pacquiao’s workrate in the early rounds, loading up too much and finding the ageless Filipino too quick to catch with single shots.. Pacquiao maintained a high tempo for the majority of the first half of the bout, bloodying the Florida mans nose in the process.. Keith however did adapt, hanging in there, holding a steady pace, persistently gaining momentum as Manny started to tire around the 7th.. The bout became increasingly competitive towards the final 4 sessions as Thurman finally enjoyed sporadic success.. Pacquiao hurt Thurman once again in the 10th, banging home a terrific left hook to the body, causing Keith to freeze up in pain momentarily.. Thurman survived the crisis but appeared to allow Manny that little bit of leeway to hold control of the fight to the end.. Scores were 115-112 twice in Pacquiao’s favour then surprisingly Glenn Feldman submitted a card of 113-114 in Thurman’s favour, forcing the decision via a split tally..

Heavyweights shine at the O2 on Saturday.

In the three feature heavyweight bouts at the weekend at the O2 in Greenwich, London, Dillian Whyte, Dereck Chisora and David Price all produced exceptional performances in their respective Victories.. First up was the former British, European and Commonwealth champion, the veteran Dereck Chisora 31-9 (22 Ko’s) taking on fellow former world title challenger Artur Szpilka 22-4 (15 Ko’s) in what appeared a classic pick em fight.. Szpilka’s southpaw style looked certain to offer a few challenges to the usually slow starting Chisora, but after a careful opener, Chisora started to roll the dice at the beginning of the second, pressuring the aggressive pole with perpetual motion firing clusters of punches, Szpilka backed himself into the ropes halfway through the session, and Dereck threw a decoy left to the body followed by a damaging right hook to the head.. Hurt badly Artur recoiled cautiously, only for Chosora to land accurate successive right hands to knockout the visitor at 1:02 of the 2nd..

Next up was the very colourful Dave Allen 17-5-2 (14 Ko’s) stepping up to face the huge punching Liverpool heavyweight David Price 25-6 (20 Ko’s).. Allen at one time would have been leagues beneath Price, but of late the match saw both fighters have a lot in common and a whole lot to prove.. On this night, David Price put on a masterclass, he boxed purposefully behind a stabbing jab and literally manipulated Allen throughout the majority of the fight.. Allen did attempt to draw Price into the pocket by holding his hands low as a lure, yet the huge 2008 Olympian held his feet and used every inch of his physical advantages to overwhelm the much smaller man.. By round 5 in was evident that the Doncaster man was on his way to a painful loss if he didn’t alter his game-plan.. Price remained steadfast and began walking Allen onto huge right hands, opening a cut above his right eye.. by round 7 the eye became swollen to the point that Allen was struggling to avoid some of Prices bigger shots.. Allen resorted to swinging huge overhand rights in desperation, only to find himself on the end of stabbing right hands and debilitating body shots.. at the conclusion of a torrid 9th round Allen returned to his corner complaining to Darren Barker that he could barely see.. The chief second indicated to the referee to call a halt with his fighter literally incapable of turning the fight around.. A jubilant David Price celebrated what he described as his redemption victory, a win that may have kept him relevant enough to earn himself decent money against a marquee name.. Price has always threatened to produce a performance like this, and to deliver on a night where it meant the most on a live Tv show is priceless at this point in his career..

Finally in the main event, WBC Silver champion Dillian Whyte 26-1 (18 Ko’s) faced the very dangerous Canadian based Colombian Oscar Rivas 26-0 (18 Ko’s) for the legitimate right to fight for the WBC heavyweight championship.. Whyte started very professionally, using range well behind the jab, keeping the smaller visitor uncomfortable with a controlled effectiveness..  Whyte stood his ground more in the second and found the first breakthrough at the halfway point in the round when he hurt Rivas with a stiff right hand off the jab, Whyte unloaded a ruthless onslaught that Oscar did very well to weather.. Whyte maintained his composure through the middle rounds, breaking Rivas heart by brushing off some of his best efforts.. Following an exceptional 8th round where he hurt and demoralised the now tiring Rivas, Whyte found himself on the floor in the 9th from a sneaky right uppercut in the opening minute of the round.. Whyte shook off the shocking knockdown to regain control of the rest of the round.. Clearly ahead, Dillian boxed intelligently for the remainder of the fight, leaving Rivas with only the desperation of a last minute miracle... Whyte overcame the obvious late onslaught to register one of his most impressive victories to date, securing a mandatory number 1 spot with the WBC and adding the WBC interim belt to his collection with a unanimous points verdict 115-112, 115-112, 116-111, over an extremely brave and lively customer...

Dillian Whyte v Oscar Rivas this Saturday at the O2.

In a compelling fight at the O2 in London on Saturday, Undefeated Colombian Oscar Rivas 26-0 (18 Ko’s) takes on one of the divisions most undervalued contenders in Dillian Whyte 25-1 (18 Ko’s) with the WBC Interim title up for grabs.. Rivas looks the part, he is a quietly spoken, moody, muscular specimen with credentials to match, but the underlying fact is that he boxed in the Olympic class of 2008 and it has taken him 11 years to land so much as a final eliminator.. For example Tyrell Biggs an 84 Olympian, boxed for the world heavyweight championship within 3 years of turning pro, Anthony Joshua a 2012 olympian fought for his first title around the 4 year mark.. Rivas has been smouldering for 11 years against largely overmatched opposition.. Whyte is the opposite, he cries out for danger, and since losing the biggest fight of his career in a Dice roll with AJ, he has built on each outing and improved in every aspect of his conditioning and development.. The fact that he has boxed back to back against Joseph Parker, Lucas Browne and Dereck Chisora shows us his mental makeup.. Whyte couldtake the Fres Oquendo Route, sit on a mandatory position, and remain inactive for 48 months to avoid banana skins until Manuel Charr honours him.. But no, Whyte relishes the challenge of meeting a potential banana skin in Rivas, literally going all in on his career.. Rivas showed terrible lack of concentration against Bryant Jennings, losing interest when the chips were down, before digging out a rather desperate stoppage at the 11th hour.. Rivas can’t adopt the same approach against Whyte, Dillian is hungry and very durable.. Whyte also considers himself somewhat of an underdog in this pairing, mentally approaching the bout as if he has nothing to lose.. Rivas is strong and rugged, but I view the Jennings performance as a hint of how he reacts when he can’t get his own way in a fight, in which case, Saturday could turn out to be a tough one for the Colombian..

An honourable mention.. Elizabeth Avis Jones.

Elizabeth Avis Jones is my mother, she is one of the sole reasons that I immersed myself into boxing for most of my life.. She pushed me to attempt the impossible and made everything that I aimed for so reachable.. She encouraged me as a young enthusiastic amateur, nurtured my love for the game, treating me every month by any means possible acquiring the latest Ring magazine and carefully boosted my esteem to shoot for higher goals.. In 1989 I expressed an interest in venturing to Las Vegas to explore the fight scene, everyone questioned my intentions except her, she made it appear so reachable and did everything in her power to encourage me in my dreams.. I got involved in coaching fighters in the 90s and helped with the careers of many professional fighters, she thoroughly lived my dream with me, sharing my passion and still encouraging me to believe that anything that I wish for, is by all means possible.. My work as a photojournalist and boxing scribe delighted her, my venture into developing this blog made her so proud.. She was selfless and loving, and the reason that I am the man I am today..
Avis passed away on the 29th of June.. I am my mothers son and she lives in me.. My tribute is not just to my mom, but to the very fact that my passion for boxing ever existed..

I offer this brief mention so my readers may understand where my love and enthusiasm comes from.. She is my love for boxing..

Shakur Stevenson comes home to impress.

The highly anticipated homecoming fight for rising featherweight contender Shakur Stevenson 12-0 (7 KOs) took place on Saturday night at the Prudential Center in Newark Nj, and the youngster didn’t disappoint, scoring an impressive 3rd round knockout of second replacement, Former world title challenger Alberto Guevara 27-5 (12 KOs).
Stevenson came to impress from the start, hurting Guevara early with a left hook to the body. The game Mexican who took the fight on just a weeks notice boxed cautiously as Shakur continued to attack the midsection.. Half way into the second, a left hook to the body dropped Guevara.. Rising promptly Alberto was dropped again by an extended left hand as Guevara was backing into the ropes, just prior to the round ending.. Half way through the 3rd a predatory Stevenson landed a questionable body shot followed by a left hand that dropped Guevara for a third time, however referee David Fields ruled the initial shot as a low blow.. The Mexican milked the recovery time for a moment before resuming cautiously.. Stevenson moved in fast, skimming Guevara causing him to slip momentarily.. The Newark man stalked purposely, looking for the openings to close the show, a stabbing jab to the body set his man up for a Right hook, straight left combination that drew curtains on the evenings proceedings at 2:37 of the 3rd..
An ecstatic Stevenson later expressed: “That was a great performance I put on for the city of Newark... Top Rank, you all have to give me better competition I want the IBF and WBO .. I would love to go to England to fight Josh Warrington.”

Pernell Sweet Pea Whitaker passes aged 55..

Tragic News today that Pernell Whitaker has died as a result of injuries sustained when he was struck by a car whilst walking on Sunday night in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Whitaker was just 55 years of age.. According to police, at 10:04 pm they received a call reporting a vehicle-pedestrian accident at the intersection between Northampton Boulevard and Baker Road in Virginia beach.. When the police arrived at the scene they found that Whitaker had been hit by a vehicle and had passed at the scene.. There are no suspicious circumstances, just a terrible and unfortunate accident which remains under investigation..
Whitaker was a defensive genius, one of the greatest technical boxers in history, largely regarded as the pound for pound #1 throughout most of the 1990s.. Pernell was an Olympic gold medalist at the 1984 games in Los Angeles and displayed his talent in possibly his biggest professional fight 9 years later, when he was held to a draw by the then 87-0 Julio Cesar Chavez, a fight that a majority of ringsiders held the opinion that Whitaker had comfortably won.. Sweet Pea held world championships at lightweight, junior welterweight, welterweight and light middleweight.. retiring with a compelling record of 40-4-1 with 17 knockouts..

Rest in peace Champ..

Daniel Dubois picks up the British heavyweight title with impressive stoppage of Nathan Gorman in London.

In a highly anticipated fight for the vacant British heavyweight championship, unbeaten youngsters Daniel Dubois 12-0 (11 KOs) wore down the dangerous Nathan Gorman 16-1 (11 Ko’s) before scoring an impressive knockout in the 5th on Saturday night at the O2 in London.. Dubois cut Gorman in round 2 before dropping him in the third with a fast combination set up with a stiff right hand.. Gorman fought bravely but failed to beat the count after being dropped again at 2:41 of the 5th.

2016 Olympic silver medalist Joe Joyce 10-0 (9 KOs) took another steady step up in class on the undercard to take a competent 12 round unanimous decision over Philadelphian former world title challenger Bryant Jennings 24-4 (14 KOs). Joe set a steady methodical pace and stick to his task.. Jennings fought in spirited spells with the more flashy work, yet failed to match Joyce’s workrate... Joe was warned several times throughout for leaning on with the shoulder, whilst Jennings was deducted a point in the tenth for repeated low blows.. Joyce is effective and strong but gets hit a little too frequently for my liking.. At 33 he has to move fast.. Jennings appeared disappointed with the wide scoring at the conclusion, yet can’t honestly argue with the result.. Scores were 118-108, 117-110, 115-110..

Charles Martin and Gerald Washington score knockout wins in Minnesota.

Former Heavyweight world title challenger and former IBF champion, Gerald Washington 20-3-1 (13 Ko’s) and Charles Martin 27-2-1 (24 Ko’s) both scored stoppage victories on Saturday night at the Armory in Minneapolis, Minnesota.. Charles took his time softening up a game Daniel Martz 18-6-1 (15 Ko’s) before scoring a couple of knockdowns and stopping him at 2:03 of the fourth.. While El Gallo Negro came from behind in a gruelling fight to score a knockout of veteran Robert Helenius 28-3 (17 Ko’s) with a right hand in the 8th.. Helenius, nose bloodied was showing signs of fatigue despite leading in the bout.. Both guys expected to make appearances against respectable opposition in mid September..

Jermaine Franklin remains unbeaten with less than impressive split decision win over Jerry Forrest in Tacoma.

In the latest instalment in the development of undefeated Saginaw heavyweight Jermaine Franklin 19-0 (13,Ko’s), saw him take on tough southpaw Jerry Forrest 25-3 (19 Ko’s) in part of a ShoBox The New Generation Card at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma Washington on Friday night.. The bout proved a highly entertaining affair, with both fighters laying it on the line, yet the highly touted Franklin failed to display the tools that have brought him to prominence.. The bout sprung to life at the end of the opener, with both guys trading relentlessly from close range. Once Jermaine began to use his jab, he maintained control of the action.. Forrest kept his hand in the action with some crafty counters, yet the pace appeared to favour Franklin by the half way mark.. The action did seem to sway back and forth going into the later sessions, with Forrest having some great success with solid left hands as he closed the distance.. The final round saw both guys letting it all hang out as the opinions at ringside appeared split as to which way the points verdict would go.. Jermaine did look the more composed throughout with the more prominent work overall..
One ringside judge did favour Forrest at 96-95 with the other two seeing it for Franklin at 97-93, moving the unbeaten prospect to his nineteenth win via an unimpressive split decision.

Ryota Murata has opportunity to avenge loss to Rob Brant this Friday in Osaka.

Japans 2012 Olympic gold medalist Ryota Murata 14-2 (11 KOs) lost his WBA middleweight title to Rob Brant 25-1 (17 KOs) in Las Vegas 9 months ago in a dreadful performance, but now has the chance to avenge the defeat this coming Friday in Osaka Japan as Murata will face Brant in a grudge rematch.. It is expected that Murata will steal back his titles, although the Americans team have other plans..
Brant and trainer Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, arrived in Tokyo two weeks ahead of the highly anticipated bout which is to be held at the Edion Arena, in Osaka..
Both fighters have been training at the Teiken boxing Gym on alternative schedules and are both reportedly in fabulous condition approaching the final week..
Murata was born in Nara City an hour outside of Osaka, yet lives and trains in Tokyo.. Murata has a huge burden on his shoulders, having lost a unanimous decision (119-109 twice, 118-110) last October, he knows that his whole nation expects him to vindicate himself and regain his title on Friday.. Ryota needs to establish his authority early and take the play away from the tricky Brant if he’s to reverse the verdict.. Although the experienced Eddie Mustafa and Brant can’t be completely overlooked.. They’ve pulled the victory off once, and must feel confident of repeating the trick for a second time, it’s an intriguing match..
