Garcia shuts out Broner in Brooklyn.

A month ago when the fight was announced between 4 weight champion Adrien Broner and current Belt-holder returning from a two and a half year hiatus, Mikey Garcia, the oddsmakers posted Garcia as a huge favourite, enraging Broner and thus adding interest to the intriguing bout.. It appeared that the oddsmakers got it right.. last night in front of 12,084 fans at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Garcia (37-0, 30 KO’s) dominated Adrien Broner over twelve energetic rounds, winning a unanimous decision that almost appeared generous to Broner at 117-111 and 116-112 (twice)
After a couple of tentative, range finding rounds, Garcia settled into a rhythm and began out-landing Broner (33-3, 24 KO’s) throughout the majority of the contest..
Broner possibly edged the opening round on workrate, but would not be allowed to win another session for 9 consecutive rounds on my card, giving Broner the 10th as barely a token consolation in a discouraging experience for the Cincinnati man. To be fair, both guys fought well, it was just Garcia's class and volume of clever punching that shut Broner out of the contest.. Adrien piled on the pressure towards the conclusion of the fight, bloodying Mikey's nose, but failing to subdue the relentless Californian who on this night was flawless..

Big Baby overwealms Washington in Brooklyn.

In a pivotal battle between two promising heavyweights, Jarrell Miller (19-0-1, 17 Ko's) scored an impressive 8th round stoppage over former WBC heavyweight title challenger Gerald Washington (18-1-1, 12 Ko's) at the Barclays centre in Brooklyn tonight.. Washington got off to a great start, controlling the opener with the jab, keeping the shorter Miller off balance and unable to mount a serious assault throughout the round.. unfortunately, the opener was the only 3 minutes of this fight Washington would compete in successfully.. The 248lb Californian allowed himself to be manoeuvred and dominated by Miller continually, who appeared to literally walk through anything Gerald had to offer.. The space Washington created earlier to utilise the jab had been surrendered as Jarrell closed down every inch of ground to turn the fight into a close quarters brawl.. In round 6 Washington opened up with his best effort of the fight landing continually at will on Miller, unfortunately having little affect.. The 298lb New Yorker was deceptively fresh and maintained a good effective work-rate even in the later rounds.. Washington looked mentally demoralised by the end of the 6th and at the conclusion of the 7th it looked a certainty that it was only a matter of time before El Gallo Negro would need rescuing from himself.. At the end of the 8th, another torrid session, referee Gary Rosato called a halt as Gerald had little to offer.. Miller scoring his most impressive win to date on paper, continuing as an undefeated heavyweight on a landscape scarce of interesting characters.. Big Baby can fight, but at close to 300 pounds, it's hard to take him seriously in terms of world titles.. Jarrell beat an intimidated opponent tonight, and at times looked far to easy to hit, the jury is still out..

Frampton v Gutierrez... Cancelled.

In a terrible twist of fate, tomorrow's originally scheduled WBC featherweight eliminator in Belfast between former champion Carl Frampton and Andres Gutierrez has been called off.. Cyclone Promotions, Who were staging the show revealed earlier this evening that Gutierrez had suffered an injury while falling in the shower.. Hopefully the match could be rescheduled in the near future, but Cyclone have advised ticket holders to retain their tickets and get in touch with their point of purchase source for further information.
The so called 'Return of the Jackal' first suffered a setback earlier today at the weigh in, where Frampton failed to meet the 126lb stipulated limit, removing all sanctioning for the fights WBC eliminator status.. However a victory for Gutierrez would have thrust him into position as mandatory challenger for WBC champion Gary Russell's title.

Margarito to face Jones in Chihuahua.

In one of the most bizarre bouts of 2017, it looks like former double world champion Antonio Margarito (40-8, 27 Ko's) will make his third return to the ring, following a 5 year hiatus against veteran road warrior Carson Jones (40-11-3, 30 Ko's) at the Manuel Aguirre Gym in Chihuahua Mexico on September 2nd.. its 8 years since Margarito held a version of a world championship, losing his WBA super title to Shane Mosley back in 2009.. Since his return following 5 years out, Antonio has beaten Jorge Paez jr and Ramon Alvarez both in 2016.
The pinnacle of Jones long career was possibly his 2012 majority decision points loss to future IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook, shaking up the unbeaten prospect in a taxing fight.. Jones last outing was a visit to the UK in November to upset unbeaten prospect Ben Hall for the vacant WBC international Silver super welterweight title with a 6 round Tko.

Dillian Whyte US debut v Michael Grant??

On the 19th August at the Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln Nebraska, once beaten heavyweight contender Dillian Whyte (20-1, 15 Ko's) will make his US debut on the undercard of the Terrence Crawford v Julius Indongo unification clash, marketing himself to the American audience while closing in on a possible title shot towards the end of the year.. The only blemish thus far, was in his 17th bout, just under 2 years ago, losing gallantly in a shootout with the now unified champion Anthony Joshua. Since then the Jamaican born Whyte has had 4 successful outings, most notably stopping Ian Lewison and picking up a British title last October, and more recently a highly entertaining split decision victory over former British, commonwealth and European champion Derrick Chisora in December. Since signing with Matchroom Dillian appears to have grown into a more responsible fighter, training more diligently, following a more regimented diet plan and leaving no stone unturned with the commitment of a world class operator. An eye catching performance on this stage could put his name on thousands of lips stateside, further raising his international profile at a critical time in his career.. Dillians opponent is however a familiar one.
Michael Grant is a household name, an all American who was once considered the heir apparent predecessor to Lennox Lewis' throne, having tasted defeat for the first time back in a 2000 title challenge at the hands of Lewis, suffering a humbling second round knockout.. Many sceptics thought that the wheels had come off the 6 foot 6 Grant, and with his confidence low, he would go on to lose twice more by stoppage within the next 3 years. However following a knockout loss to the hard punching Dominick Guinn in 2003, Michael went on an 8 fight, 7 year winning streak, next losing only by a slim points margin to Tomasz Adameck in 2010. A year later Grant would spring to life with knockout wins over 7 Footer Tye Fields and former IBF champ Franz Botha, although inactivity would eventually hurt Michael and stall his return. After 2 years out, he'd suffer back to back losses at the hands of Carlos Takam and Manuel Charr, and more recently, following a 3 year ring absence Grant would suffer a terrible 2 round knockout to Krzysztof Zimnoch in Poland, as recent as 3 months ago.. At (48-7, 36 Ko's) Michaels better days are possibly 15 years behind him, at a time when he scored what was probably his last serious victory of note over a live opponent in Robert Davis back in 2002. Unfortunately it's a reluctance to walk away from the sport that has landed him another opportunity to lose to a promising fighter on live Tv..

Mairis Briedis v Mike Perez in Latvia, September 20.

The first of the upcoming quarter finals of the World Boxing Super Series Cruiserweight tournament, between Mairis Briedis (22-0, 18Ko's) and former heavyweight contender Mike Perez (22-2-1, 14 Ko's) will take place at the Riga Arena in Latvia on September 20th.. Briedis, the current WBC and IBO champion had the luxury of choosing the Cuban as his quarter final opponent at the WBSS live draft in Monaco on July 8th.. Briedis last boxed in April, picking up his titles by decisioning Marco Huck in Germany.. Perez won his only previous cruiserweight appearance last month in Belfast Ireland, knocking out the previously undefeated Viktor Biscak in 28 seconds.. The Cruiserweight tourney is packed full of explosive talented fighters with Oleksandr Usyk heading the cast..

Stiverne's missed WBC- VADA test may cost him his shot.

In the WBC's, VADA supported drug testing program, it lists the specific fighters whom have complied with the regulatory testings, fighters whom have both passed, failed or missed a testing.. In the more recent list it has categorised former WBC heavyweight champion Bermaine Stiverne as having missed a test.. The WBC has specified that a missed test counts automatically as a failed drug test. This particular ruling is very important in relation with current WBC heavyweight Champion Deontay Wilders immediate future.. Back in February the governing body ordered Wilder to make a defence against its mandatory, who just happens to be Stiverne. The failure to register a drug test before the deadline, may cost Stiverne the opportunity to regain the title that he lost in 2015, also opening the door for the possible muted matchup with undefeated Cuban, Luis Ortiz, closer to the end of the year.. Stiverne has yet to make a public statement and no yet announcement has been released concerning the situation.. The plot thickens.

Diary Entry (2002) Nevada / California boxing beat.

July of 2001 I took on an assignment for Bragging Rights Corner to cover the boxing activity around Nevada and California. I spent a month traveling the wild, wild west in search of fistical perfection. I scheduled the four weeks around several venues and bouts that would hook me up with a few old friends who were making cameo appearances inside and outside the ropes throughout the duration of my stay.
The selected month was stuffed full of championship action in extremely close proximity, to be honest the trip was an absolute must and looking back it was to have a large part in evaluating one of next month's high profile Heavyweight Championship matches. July 2001 had me sitting at a bar in the Reno Hilton with Alex 'The Destroyer' Stewart, David 'The Dream' Defiagbon, Kevin Kelley, and Dominick Guinn talking big time boxing. The conversations ranged from past fights and opponents to upcoming prospects and battles.
I have never enjoyed such educated Boxing parlay to this day, passing by as we spoke were a 'Who Is Who' of pugilistic players, movers and shakers. Thell Torrence was in the house as trainer of David Defiagbon, Corey 'T-Rex' Sanders had a word or two to say, Sharif Davis was present along with many others from Team Saleem handling T-Rex. In fact if I were to list the people around the sports bar for those two hours you would probably not believe it.
This evening was like an impromptu Canastota; as great a start to my journey as I could have imagined. Andre Purlett, Jimmy Thunder, DaVarryl "Touch of Sleep" Williamson, Mark Breland, Ronnie Shields, David Vedder, Mr. Kushner, Shelley Finkel, not to forget the plethora of losing combatants who played as important a role in the cards action as the victors. This was step one of the tour that would see me Las Vegas based to cover the month's major show at Caesars, featuring Sugar Shane Mosley vs Adrian Stone. Most of the people I encountered in Reno were headed southbound to the Neon Capital to the same venue as me a fortnight later.
I made a call from the Sacramento Bus Station to The Ringside Gym in Vegas to make a connection with my long-time friend Kenny Adams, to assess him of my plans. Kenny told me that he was training a few very good Nigerian heavyweights and was to have them spar at Top Rank for a few days with the very dangerous WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko who was featuring weeks later against local challenger Charles Shufford. Kenny asked if I would like to accompany him and the fighters to the sparring sessions as moral support to the newly imported Nigerians. I jumped at the chance to get a close look at The Giant Russian in the flesh, very close up and personal with Dr. Klitschko, to see if he really had the tools to perform surgery on the heavyweight division's top fighters.
This was to take up my spare time as I waited for the circus to arrive in town and set up center stage at Caesars for Stone vs Mosley and its co-feature attraction, the return of Michael Grant versus a potentially harmless opponent, the usually lively yet unheralded trier by the name of Jameel "Big Time" McCline. The following weeks gave me a chance to examine both Klitschko and McCline closely and therefore have a great insight in December 7th's match-up between 2002's current heavyweight dangermen.
Next thing planned on my heavy schedule was to meet Kenny and drive out to where Samuel Peter and Teke Ohrun were sharing an apartment; near an area called Summerlin by a man made lake surrounded by glorious retirement homes... Kenny asked me to go knock on door 22 and make myself heard to rouse the giant Nigerians. The curtains twitched and a 250 pound Samuel Peter emerged, complete with a melon slice grin and the most furious Afro I have ever seen, closely followed by Teke, a similarly sized heavyweight with a slightly lesser amateur pedigree than Sammy, who was a national champion and Olympic representative in Sydney. Both men knew me from previous meetings and were very comical and jovial on the trip to Camp Klitschko, unaware of what activities lay ahead... This afternoon was to be no laughing matter for either.
Top Rank Gym is placed in an obscure corner of some warehouse-like buildings, slightly off Industrial Road, running southbound parallel to the Strip; a road that is infested with lesser known strip joints and car body shops. As we arrived, Boza Edwards and former Ali entourage member Gene Kilroy met us at the entrance and led the two Nigerians into the training facility that never seemed to change to me. Large and spacious with two championship sized rings and a very wide open area for bag work and warm-ups. Four sparring partners were to be employed that day; former WBA Heavyweight champion Tony Tubbs arrived with his tiny son and a local heavyweight known as Jakarta to make the team complete. Each changed and warm-ups began.
Jakarta looked nervous; chattered constantly looking for reassuring words. I offered some advice, obvious stuff really, just to calm him down but keep his moral high. All of the sparring partners, however, were well traveled and capable of handling themselves and with the big gloves on and headgear in place had to just keep their wits about themselves and handle business.
Has anyone ever said "you never get a second chance to make a first impression?" Well, I was just about to be highly impressed; the doors slammed open and the Gigantic Ukrainian strolled in. He walked purposefully towards us all and introduced himself confidently, shaking every single man's hand solidly.
Wlad was the most muscular Caucasian I have ever seen that close up; he was absolutely ridiculous, yet had grace, fluid movements and was not at all what I expected. Here began my analysis of the most dangerous white heavyweight in several decades. His warm-ups were to take almost an hour, hand wrapping was to take twenty minutes and then the session was to begin.
Teke was first. Klitschko prodded and poked a long stabbing jab at the forehead pad on the Nigerian's headgear; just professional sparring, no head hunting or killer intentions like I had witnessed in raw classless Tyson sessions a decade ago. Klitschko was in it for a pure learning excercise. Teke is tall, about 6'4" yet looked dwarfed by the Ukrainian. He did his best to keep at close range to prevent Wlad from creating space to work; this is when the most curious thing struck me... Klitschko enjoyed his best success at close quarters, it visually surprised Teke and the rest of us, it was revealing and seemed to startle the African who now had a choice to make, get out jabbed at range or get battered by short hooks at close proximity; this was discovery number one.
Session two. Enter Samuel Peter.... Taking into consideration that Sammy was a very well schooled amateur who had great international experience and past Olympic history, he was to find out how unique Wladimir is.
Samuel is quite short in comparison and is in a similar mold of a Tyson or a Lionel Butler only more stocky and solid. He boxed stand up style to try to maintain fake height as a confidence boosting illusion but it was useless and once again Wladimir prodded his long lance-like weaponry into Peters' face; quickly Samuel did a very intelligent thing, he began a regimental side to side slipping motion not unlike a late eighties Tyson.
Once again Klitschko revealed his versatility, he took a half step back and unleashed a stiff uppercut into the pendulum like head of the Nigerian, BINGO!! Timed perfectly, a stern look of unease shot across Samuel's face, he moved towards Wlad and it was even worse; out of the frying pan and into the fire. Wlad's favourite flavour was what Sammy had served up; slipping aside Wladimir slyly dropped a hook onto his partner's head at half force, a gesture that made me respect the Russian 200% more from here on in, many other prima donna heavies would have exploited the opportunity and gone all out to knock Samuel's head clean off, but Wlad knew it was pointless to slaughter the helping hands and a slap was enough to show his superiority. Ding!!! Samuel looked like he had just survived a car crash, Wlad was barely breathing hard as he stood receiving instructions from cornerman Fritz.
This was a very highly tuned, versatile, fluid and powerful monster truck that was only running in first gear. Next session was the youthful Jakarta. Wladimir treated this as a light slap fest, and had 100% control throughout the full three minutes yet to keep moral high he actually allowed the outclassed American some openings to shoot at. I was totally sold, Wladimir Klitschko was the most classy professional heavyweight that I had ever seen in camp. Jakarta came out of the ring gleaming in perspiration and was somehow ecstatic that he was in one piece.
Session four saw squat veteran Tony Tubbs clamber through the ropes muttering something about "I am gonna Ol skool this motha F***ker!"... a comment that seemed to wake Klitschko up and stare blankly through the foolish ex WBA Champ. Tony slipped awkwardly into range and dipped under the blazing jabs of the Russian, who had adopted a longer range approach towards Tubbs cagey style. Then the strangest thing happened, Tubbs threw a right hand and Klitschko seemed to allow it to land as if to draw Tubbs forward, and as Tubbs took the bait and stepped into range, Wladimir swivelled elegantly to Tubbs' right and homed a heavy right uppercut directly onto the American's chest area dropping him painfully and heavily.
Lessons were learned by Tubbs immediately; this cat was not to be trifled with, and the shell shocked Tony Tubbs barely came out of his shell for the remainder of his session. His tiny son was bouncing a B-ball at ringside and slipped to my side whispering, "How is my daddy doing?" "Ok, he is doing just fine little man, just fine"... Just fine my ass, the most horrible porkie pie I had ever told... Tony was getting his ass Ol skooled Royally, and more.
Cutting the story short, each man that stepped in with Wlad was presented with a different fighter, he was a man of many guises and had just manhandled every sparring partner he met with plain simplicity... I spoke to the four men as they were changing into street clothes. It was like discussing Shakespeare with a bunch of dyslexics; they tried hard to explain what they had just endured yet made no sense what so ever, because four men had just sparred with four different Klitschkos.
This is the same multi-faceted principle that Jameel McCline must face next month, and on what I had just seen I don't envy him.

Eubank jr outclasses crafty Abraham to secure place in WBSS.

The Art of selecting the most suitable opponent at exactly the correct time in a fighters career is a time served tradition, and last weeks Chris Eubank Jr v Arthur Abraham IBO SuperMiddleweight title fight at the SSE in London was no exception.. Between 2005 and 2009 Arthur Abraham held and defended the IBF middleweight championship 10 times, then on 2 occasions between 2012 and 2015 he held the same WBO belt his opponents father held in the 1990s, defending it 6 times, a title he still held until a defeat by Gilberto Ramirez in April of last year.. On the face of it, Arthur is a trusted household name with credibility, albeit a dozen fights ago, well shy of his 52 fight career.. Abraham was employed as the perfect challenger to showcase the busy, crisp punching youngster.. The choice was flawless..
Prior to his February shot at the lightly regarded Renold Quinlan, most observers would be mistaken for judging Jr on his 2014 Split decision loss to the now WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders in a fight where he appeared to box within himself, with the lack of urgency that could have earned Jr British, Commonwealth and European titles and probably the opportunity at the WBO that subsequently came Saunders way.. Yet in contrast we've seen Dominant stokes of genius against the likes of Dmitri Chudinov, Nick Blackwell and Spike O'Sullivan..
The importance of the occasion brought out the best in Chris Jr (25-1,19 Ko's) who never allowed Abraham the luxury of a close quarter engagement from the off.. The pattern saw the Champion beat the pedestrian Armenian to the cleaner work throughout the first half of the fight, Arthur marching into range with a high guard only to be continually countered with clinical precision.. By the middle rounds the tempo set by the youngster began to take its toll on Abraham, who was a sitting target for the trademark uppercuts Jr cracked in from close range.. It was evident by the 9th that there was no road back for Abraham, who had left it too late to try a rally to subdue the enthusiastic champion.. Eubank’s strong, quick combinations often had Abraham on the defensive, earning him a clear cut unanimous decision by Scores of 118-110, 118-110, 120-108. With the win, Eubank retains his IBO 168lb belt and will move onto the lucrative World Boxing Super Series. Abraham (46-6, 30 Ko's) looked an ageing fighter at 38, who has possibly come to the conclusion of a brilliant career..

Jermaine Taylor finds trouble once again.

The continuing saga in the turbulent life of former SuperMiddleweight champion Jermaine Taylor continues. 38 year old Taylor was picked up by police on Tuesday in Maumelle, Arkansas for allegedly biting his girlfriend on the face and arm, while repeatedly threatening to kill her. According to a local Arkansas newspaper, Taylor was later released by police but is being charged with first-degree terroristic threatening, third-degree domestic battery and interference with emergency communication. Taylor has been involved in numerous incidents regarding the law in recent years and is currently on probation, many closest to him now fear for the fighters mental state..
In 2005 Jermaine was the linear SuperMiddleweight champion, making 4 successful defences including 2 impressive victories over Bernard Hopkins.. Jermaine has only ever lost to 3 fighters in a fabulous career, Carl Froch, Arthur Abraham and Kelly Pavlik.. Taylor last boxed in 2014 where he once again picked up a title, beating Sam Soliman in Biloxi for the IBF championship, a belt he had to relinquish soon after..

Dirrell meets Benavides in September for vacant WBC title.

The Vacant WBC SuperMiddleweight title will now be contested for in a match between Anthony Dirrell (30-1-1, 24 Ko's) and David Benavidez (18-0, 17 Ko's) most likely on September 9th with no venue yet announced.. Former champion Dirrell lost his title to Badou Jack in 2014 and is coming off a knockout victory over Norbert Nemesapati last January, while the 20 year old undefeated Benavidez is coming off an 8 round Ko of Rogelio Medina to earn his shot.. Dirrell was originally scheduled to meet British prospect Callum Smith for the vacant title until Smith opted to enter the WBSS tournament where he's due to face Swede Erik Skoglund on September 16th.. incidentally, Dirrell will be contesting for his old belt after his predecessor Badou Jack vacated the title to climb up to light heavyweight..

Wilder v Ortiz looking likely for November in Brooklyn.

Word has it that negotiations are already under way for a Deontay Wilder, Luis Ortiz fight on November 4 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The November 4th date looks most likely however there is a small possibility that an unoccupied October 14 date also in Brooklyn could claim the bout..
Promoter Lou DiBella's, DiBella Entertainment, who have promoted Wilder’s more recent fights in conjunction with Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions reserved both Barclays dates previously with Wilder in mind..
Deontay Wilder (38-0, 37 KOs) however has a mandatory due against former opponent Bermane Stiverne (25-2-1, 21 KOs), Wilder took the WBC title from Stiverne back in January 2015, and although a rematch doesn't appear to have the appeal of an Ortiz match, it could prove the only stumbling block technically..
If all concerned get the green light for a Wilder-Ortiz bout, its most likely that it would be broadcast by the Tv network Showtime.
Haymon and Don King, Stiverne’s promoter, have been negotiating a step-aside agreement that would pay the Haitian/ Las Vegas based Stiverne a sizeable sum for allowing Wilder free passage to defend against the dangerous Ortiz, who’s currently ranked No3 by that organisation.
The 38-year-old Cuban (27-0, 23 KOs, 2 NC) does look the part, an awkward southpaw with solid technical ability and impressive power, yet at his advanced age, needs to secure this kind of opportunity now, rather than later.. Wilder, 31, has been very steadfast about not facing fighters who have a history with PED's
His 2016 fight against Russia’s Alexander Povetkin was canceled on short notice due to Povetkin’s positive Meldonium test, 8 months on, scheduled opponent Andrzej Wawrzyk tested positive for a banned substance opening the door for last minute replacement Gerald Washington..
In February 2015 Luis Ortiz was stripped of his WBA interim title for tested positive for an anabolic steroid during a test before his knockout of Lateef Kayode in September 2014.
Wilder had originally stated that he wouldn’t fight Ortiz because of his previous PED usage.. but has more recently backtracked, apparently changed his mind. Ortiz, who signed a managerial agreement with Haymon three months ago, must first enrol in the WBC’s Clean Boxing Program in order to obtain a shot at its title, and according to a press release from the WBC just this week, Ortiz has not been tested by VADA at all in 2017. Wilder is enrolled and fully supports the program and has tested negative multiple times..
Ortiz is coming off a string of impressive wins, most recently over in the Uk last December when he stopped durable Dave Allen in Manchester..
incidentally, Bermaine Stiverne has tested negative this year, but also missed a test, according to the WBC’s current listings..
If Deontay does take the Ortiz bout, and all things necessary to bring the fight to fruition run accordingly, the WBC champion will gain a whole lot of admiration from the boxing public including myself, Wilder could have very easily taken the much simpler Stiverne route and chosen a less perilous path..

Charles Martin stops Michael Marrone in 1.

Former IBF world heavyweight title holder Charles Martin (25-1-1, 23 KOs) stopped an inept Mike Marrone (21-8, 15 KOs) in the opener on Tuesday night at the Rapides Coliseum in Alexandria, Louisiana. This was Martin’s second appearance since losing the world title to Anthony Joshua. Martin who himself appeared a little fleshy set up a crafty temple shot early in the round with the jab, dropping Mike almost through the ropes, several moments later Charles caught a woefully out of shape Marrone with a short left hook to the body that closed the show.. Its a shame to see Marrone in such a dire spectacle, back in 2007 he was being considered a promising future prospect with an impressive 18-0 record, before losing to name fighters Davarryll Williamson, Guillermo Jones and more recently Shannon Briggs.. Martin continues to work his way back into contention, but looks highly unlikely to step towards an opponent of any note anytime soon.

Billy Joe Saunders to defend against Willie Monroe jr, Sept 16.

Britains WBO middleweight title holder Billy Joe Saunders (24-0, 12 KOs) looks set to defend his belt against number 5 ranked Willie Monroe Jr (21-2, 6 KOs) on September 16 at the Copper Box Arena in London. This is Saunders second defence since winning the title in December of 2015, his last appearance following a year of inactivity was an unconvincing points win over Artur Akavov in December.. Monroe who lost in his only title opportunity to Gennady Golovkin in 2015 is coming off a points victory over Gabe Rosado in September.. Saunders v Monroe will coincide with the forthcoming WBA/WBC/IBF middleweight championship bout between Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez in Las Vegas..
Saunders’ promoter Frank Warren understands the importance of this fight, the winner of this fight will have the missing piece on the Middleweight puzzle, Canelo and Golovkin will both want that WBO belt to complete unification..
This fight is crucial.

Kownacki stops Szpilka in 4 in NY.

In a highly uncharacteristic performance, former WBC title challenger Artur Szpilka (20-2, 15 Ko's) suffered an unexpected stoppage defeat at the hands of the relatively inexperienced Adam Kownacki (15-0, 13 Ko's) in four rounds at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale New York.. Szpilka, who had only previously lost to quality operators Bryant Jennings and Deontay Wilder, looked subdued throughout most of the bout and allowed himself to be backed up and outworked by the fresher looking Kownacki.. Throughout the first 3 Kownacki frustrated Szpilka with accurate combinations, without any spirited response.. The fourth round saw Szpilka clown the unbeaten Kownacki, lowering his hands, walking onto a cluster of shots that dropped the Pole. Moments later Kownacki seized the moment and hammered home clean head punches, urging Arthur Mercante jr to stop the bout.. Szpilka appears the sole noted name of Kownacki's unblemished resume, while Szpilka had notable wins over Jameel McCline, Owen Beck and Tomasz Adameck, but couldn't match the busier Kownacki on the night.. Trainer Ronnie Shields appeared baffled at the conclusion of the fight, explaining that Artur had a tremendous camp and had followed very little of the gameplan they had in place.. Adam was his career lightest at 242lbs and looks a promising prospect..

Lebedev outpoints Flanagan to defend WBA Super title

The WBA cruiserweight Super champion Denis Lebedev (30-2, 22 KOs) retained his Championship on Saturday evening with a workman like unanimous decision over WBA number 6 ranked Mark Flanagan of Australia (22-4, 15 KOs) at the DIVS in Ekaterinburg, Russia. Lebedev had the challenger on the floor in the ninth with a body shot, before securing one sided Scores of 119-108, 119-108, 120-107.
This is Lebedevs first outing since losing his IBF title to Murat Gassiev last December..
Interestingly, despite being a leading light in the current cruiserweight landscape, Lebedev has made no effort to include himself in the upcoming Super Series tournament which includes every other significant fighter in the division..

Ohara Davies silenced in 7 by Josh Taylor.

In a highly anticipated grudge match, Unbeaten super lightweights, Ohara Davies and Josh Taylor backed up their pre fight verbals with an epic scrap for the WBC Silver and Commonwealth titles at the Braehead Arena in Glasgow last night.. The stylish Davies used his long rangy style to pick up early points, often sacrificing his height by reaching from a crouch, Taylor 9-0 (8 Ko's) enjoying added home advantage had to play counter puncher, making the Londoner pay with crisper punching.. In round 3 Taylor's fast hands forced the first breakthrough of the fight, a fast body attack followed by a right hand dropped Davies, a flash knockdown but a significant moment in the bout.. Davies 15-0 (12 Ko's) came back remarkably, although his well placed shots appeared to be thrown off balance, allowing Taylor to maintain his rhythm and counter comfortably.. Round 6 Saw a determined Davies look to stamp his authority on the fight, backing the Scotsman up with a Solid flurry, only to be backed up himself, the round was action packed with both men enjoying moments of success.. Going into round 7 many ringsiders had Davies ahead, although Josh's shots did appear to land more cleaner as opposed to Davies volume.. Taylor appeared the more comfortable as the anxious Londoner took chances.. Davies jab had lost its snap allowing Taylor to counter with ease. 2 minutes into the round Davies, who by now was literally stalking Taylor rather than cutting off the ring, lunged with a long left hook, completely exposing himself to a reflex right hook counter from Taylor which once again dropped Davies. This time the Essex man was distressed, rising precariously at 8, as Taylor moved in to finish, Davies appeared to turn away and wave his challenge to an end in a moment of surrender.. Josh Taylor pulling off a famous significant victory in only his 10th outing.. Defeat is going to be a bitter pill for Ohara to swallow, quitting was the last thing you'd expect from a man with such boastful ambitions.. It's early in both men's careers, hopefully it's an educational exercise in humility for Davies.

Hughie Fury boxes exhibition ahead of Parker clash.

WBO #1 heavyweight and scheduled title challenger Hughie Fury boxed a time filling six round exhibition bout with a very pedestrian Kamil Sokolowski (4-10-2, 1 KO) tonight at the Copper Box Arena in London. Both guys opted to box without headgear as Fury literally went through the motions, dominating the action and more importantly, emerging from the action unscathed.. The 22-year-old Fury hadn't boxed in over a year, since his April 2016 technical decision victory over awkward Fred Kassi. Tonight's activity was important to Hughie who wanted to gauge his ring sharpness after such a lengthy period of inactivity leading up to an important opportunity.. The bout was changed to an exhibition following a decision by the WBO not to sanction a tune-up fight prior to the September 23rd bout.
WBO champion Joseph Parker was in London to witness Fury first hand from ringside. After the action, both men exchanged pleasantries and offered a great photo opportunity to publicise their upcoming bout.. In the meantime possible future opponent, Dillian Whyte took a chance opportunity to get close and personal with Parker, both men acted in good spirits even exchanging a handshake.. Both Fury and Parker will meet again on Tuesday at a press conference in Manchester to kick off the promotion for their September 23rd clash at the Manchester Arena.

Canadian referee Marlon Wright passes.

On a regretful note, I'm sad to report that highly respected world class referee Marlon B Wright passed away peacefully on Thursday at his home in Montreal Canada. Wright had battled skin cancer privately for a long time, and was only 51 years old.. Marlon had refereed or judged hundreds of high profile championship bouts globally, and will always be remembered for his handling of the Lucien Bute v Librado Andrade, IBF championship bout in 2008 when he rescued the beaten Bute for several seconds to send Andrade to a neutral corner in a crucial moment, saving Bute's title.. Marlon more recently officiated the Kell Brook v Gennady Golovkin fight along with the David Lemieux v Hassan N'Dam bout.. Marlon leaves behind a son and a daughter. RIP.

WBA order Rigondeaux v Flores rematch.

The Championships Committee of the World Boxing Association has ordered a rematch between WBA super bantamweight Super champion, Guillermo Rigondeaux (17-0, 11 Ko's) and interim champion Moisés Flores (25-0, 17 Ko's). Both sides have 30 days to reach an agreement to avoid purse bids with a 75/25 purse split in favour of Rigondeaux.
Both guys fought June 17th with the bout ending by first round knockout by a late shot thrown by Rigondeaux, the result was later changed to no contest by the Nevada State Athletic Commission because the KO blow, upon review, had landed after the bell. After an analysis of the fight, the WBA Championships Committee agreed with the view of the NSAC.
Amidst the confusion at the conclusion, Victory was awarded to Rigondeaux. After review, Flores is still recognized as interim champion but will be under the mandatory 60 day suspension for his own safety following the subsequent knockout.

Horn dethrones Pacquiao in contentious fight.

In what appears to be the upset of the year so far, undefeated Australian challenger Jeff Horn (17-0-1, 11 KOs) scored a highly contentious twelve round unanimous decision over WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (59-7-2, 38 KOs) in front of 51,052 home supporters at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, Australia, on Sunday afternoon..
Horn took the fight to Pacquiao in the early rounds, stealing an early points lead. The bout remained competitive, with Horn suffered a cut over his right eye. Pacquiao looked to be taking the upper hand by the sixth, figuring out the Australians style and out-landing comfortably although suffering a deep cut in his hairline by an accidental headbutt. A round later a head clash saw Pacquiao cut a second time, at a time in the fight when he appeared to be taking control.. The ninth round was a dominant one for the Filipino fighter, Pacquiao had the challenger visibly hurt and almost on the brink of defeat, so much so that between rounds, referee Mark Nelson told Horn he had to “show me something” in round ten or he would call a halt to the bout.. Horn hung in there, gallantly offering willingness to compete until the final bell.. I, like many ringsiders had it a competitive, entertaining bout, but with the champion comfortably retaining his belt. However Scores emerged astonishingly 117-111, 115-113, 115-113, all in the favour of Horn..
The Challenger boxed exceptionally, stayed busy and was always competitive.. But the cleaner and more frequent shots were all landed by Pacquiao..
Teddy Atlas commentating for ESPN commented, "You don't award the challenger the title for doing well."
Continuing
"To score this fight in the manner that in was, you've either got to be incompetent or corrupt, and I don't think anyone can possibly be that incompetent."

Okolie makes it 4 out of 4 at the O2.

Undefeated Uk Olympic Heavyweight representative Lawrence Okolie boxed his 4th professional outing tonight at the O2, against Russell Henshaw (7-5, 2 Ko's) in a scheduled 6 rounder at Cruiserweight. Okolie was scheduled to box Henshaw in previous outings, originally on his debut back in March on the Crolla v Linares card in Manchester, each time failing to materialise.. On paper Hanshaw should have provided a stubborn test for the hard punching Londoner, yet within a minute of the opener it was evident that Okolie's tenacity and punch variety was too much for the Derby fighter, who was forced to take a count from a vicious body shot early... Moments later despite a gallant show of bravado Henshaw was forced to succumb to another solid body shot.. upon rising Russell appeared vulnerable to Okolies oncoming attack, forcing the referee to step in with 50 seconds left in the round.. Okolie a likeable fighter who is referred to as 'The Sauce' these days looks to have the dimensions to support a move up to heavyweight in the future, an evidently heavy puncher who's tally now stands at 3 Wins all Knockouts inside a single round.. A recent tense meeting between fellow cruiserweight contenders Okolie and Isaac Chamberlain has lit the fuse to what could potentially be a huge domestic clash down the line..

Povetkin outpoints stubborn Rudenko in Russia.

Everything these days surrounding the former WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin (32-1, 23 KOs) appears to be shrouded in some type of controversy, including the opening round of tonight's double intercontinental title fight with Ukraines Andriy Rudenko (31-3, 19 Ko's) at the Luzhniki Concert Hall in Moscow, Russia.. Two minutes into the opener Povetkin unleashed a volley of close range uppercuts, followed by a roughhouse right hand to the back of Rudenkos neck, as the Referee broke the pair Andriy protested the foul, in obvious pain. It took close to a 5 minute break in the round as the Ukrainians corner massaged the injury, stalling the action. When all concerned realised that a Povetkin disqualification was highly unlikely, action commenced.. Povetkin was consistently the boss in what unfolded to be a highly entertaining fight, hurting Rudenko frequently throughout.. The tough Ukrainian hung around in an attempt to spoil Povetkins work through the middle rounds and even found the occasional success with crisp counter punches.. Towards the final stretch Povetkin showed championship class, patiently picking his shots to earn an impressive unanimous decision ... 120-109, 120-108, 120-108. Povetkin' victory earned him the vacant WBA Inter-Continental and WBO International heavyweight titles.
Povetkin last boxed in December when he scored a 6th round knockout over Johann Duhaupas, a replacement for the original opponent Bermaine Stiverne who pulled out of their WBC final eliminator following Povetkins substance test failure for the stimulant Ostarine.. This was the second occasion the former WBA champion had failed a test prior to an important bout, Povetkin failed a test for Meldonium in May of 2016, weeks before his scheduled WBC title fight with Deontay Wilder in Russia..
